How to Decide Between Original Art and Prints

How to Decide Between Original Art and Prints

Let’s dive into the world of artwork—specifically, the various types of art you might come across in galleries or online. Have you ever fallen in love with a piece, only to be left feeling confused when you find out there’s an original, a print, a canvas print, and a reworked version? It can be overwhelming. I’m here to break it all down so you can make the best decision for your space and style!

Originals: One-of-a-Kind Art

An original painting is exactly that: one-of-a-kind. When you buy an original, you’re purchasing a unique piece created directly by the artist. You'll be able to see the brushstrokes, texture, and the artist’s personal touch in every inch. Originals are always signed, which adds to their value and authenticity.

Types of Originals:

  • Commissioned Painting: If you’re looking for something custom, a commission is a great option. In this case, you’ll work closely with the artist to design a piece that suits your specific preferences—size, color, subject, and all! These paintings typically take anywhere from a month to a year to complete, depending on the artist’s process.
  • Collection Painting: Collection pieces are created and released by the artist, often revolving around a theme or subject matter. These are created and then made available to the public, either all at once or as individual releases.

Framing Originals: While you can add a frame if you prefer, many artists paint the sides of the canvas for a professional and seamless look—no frame required.

Prints: High-Quality Reproductions

Prints are a more affordable option but still offer you the chance to bring artwork into your home. Prints are typically reproductions of an original, made on high-quality materials to give you a similar look and feel at a fraction of the cost.

Types of Prints:

  • Canvas Print: This is a high-quality reproduction printed on archival canvas. It’s then stretched over a wooden frame, and the image wraps around the edges, so no framing is needed! You can hang it straight on your wall as soon as you get it.
    • Reworked Canvas Print: This is like the middle ground between a print and an original. An artist takes a canvas print and adds hand-painted brushstrokes and texture, so no two pieces are exactly alike. This gives it the feel of an original, but at a lower price point.
  • Paper Print: Paper prints are high-quality reproductions on archival paper or canvas. They’re great for framing and allow you to personalize the piece with your choice of mat and frame.

Giclée Prints: You’ll often hear the term “giclée” when it comes to prints. This refers to fine art prints created using high-quality inkjet printing. It’s a method that ensures superior color accuracy and clarity.

Which One Should You Choose?

The decision between originals and prints often depends on a few factors. Here are some things to consider:

  • Price: Originals tend to come with a higher price tag, but they also tend to increase in value over time, so they're truly an investment.
  • Size: Sometimes an original is too large for your space, but prints come in various sizes, so you can find the perfect fit for any room.
  • Feel: Canvas prints, especially reworked ones, give you a vibe similar to originals because of the texture and presence of the piece. If you're looking for a dynamic and textured piece, a reworked canvas print might be the perfect choice.
  • Starting Your Collection: Paper prints are a great starting point if you're just beginning your art collection. You can get them framed to match your space, and you’re still able to enjoy the artwork at a lower cost.

There’s no right or wrong answer—whether you choose an original or a print, what matters most is that you love the piece you bring into your home!
